Celebrating Community and Craft in the SCA
Hello, dear friends and fellow artisans!
As Winter settles in around us, I find myself reflecting about all the kindness, generosity, and creativity that fill our lives. This is true whether in 15th-century Bruges or today in the SCA. In Bruges, we’d say that winter’s darkness is brightened by the kindness of friends. The talents we share also contribute to this brightness and I feel that spirit in our SCA community as well.

This season, I’m overflowing with gratitude for the friendship and closeness I’ve found among you all. Throughout the year, you’ve shared not just your skills and knowledge. You’ve also shared your time, energy, and enthusiasm. This has filled Lonely Tower’s Gatherings and Revels with warmth and joy.

Some may focus on material gifts during the holidays, I believe the real treasures in the SCA are the moments when we share our crafts. Sharing our knowledge and the time we invest in each other are true treasures.

This was on full display recently at Kris Kinder. I saw the wonderful thoughtfulness of everyone selling or buying handmade gifts. Whether it was garb, accessories, or tools, each was crafted or chosen with such care. It’s always inspiring to see the heart that each person puts into their work.

This year, I’m especially grateful for the “gift” of teaching and the friendships that have deepened through our shared journey. A special thanks to HL Nest Ffynnon for her friendship and guidance in basketry (truly a gift!). And to HL Natalya Vasilova for being a sister in the SCA and sharing her brilliant “backstory” research approach. Thanks also to my apprentice HL Astrid Esbjornsdotter for her humor, curiosity, and carpool adventures. And to all my friends in Lonely Tower—may we keep learning and growing together! I especially want to thank Baroness Kathleen for the chance to make more beaded fibulae for our new members. It’s a joy to create something that will be cherished and appreciated by others.

Whatever way you celebrate this season, I wish you a joyful and peaceful holiday. Keep sharing your gifts of knowledge, creativity, and service with the community. You all make the SCA a brighter, richer place for us all.
And lastly, here’s to warm hearths, light spirits, and full hearts for each of you this holiday season!
With peace and joy,
Jehanne Bening
