Work in Progress: April Heraldry Shenanigans
For last Saturday’s Crown Tournament, I finally finished the heraldic design with the blue background and three white crescents. It’s a simple design—elegant and clean—but true to form, I tried to make it complicated first. Azumi Nariko’s device isn’t up on the Calontir website yet. So, I tracked it down on the SCA heralds’ OSCAR submission site. I copied the image and enlarged it. Then, I spent a ridiculous amount of time wrestling with my printer so I could trace it.
Spoiler alert: the printer won.
I tried every trick I knew. Finally, I gave up and just made it the smart way. I used three sizes of circle templates: two to create the crescents, and one for the center circles. Which, of course, I should have done from the start. That hour of my life is gone forever. And this officially overtook “sewing the 9″x10″ support fabric” as my Most Annoying Project Part. A new champion has been crowned!

With the newly painted device dry and ready to go I took them to my spare bedroom. (a.k.a. the land of cat fur). There, I applied the sticky Velcro patches to the top back corners. Simple, right? Ha! One of the four devices was for a knight. This meant I had to rearrange the rest to keep them in order of rank. But the SCA gods smiled upon me—someone had dropped out, so I didn’t have to redo everyone. Silver linings!
Here it is, folks. This is the April 12, 2025 Lonely Tower Roll of Arms. It is fresh from the herald’s table to your screen.

And no rest for the artsy—I already have four more to paint or update. Two are brand new. One I missed (oops). The last one includes second of someone’s arms, you’re allowed two. Oh, and I’ll be adding a black ribbon to one device for someone who recently passed away. A little honor, a little beauty, and a whole lot of tracing.
Stay tuned—more heraldic adventures coming soon!
