Do Something: The Power of Action

I was watching Michelle Obama’s speech the last night, and something she said really stuck with me. At one point, she urged everyone to “Do something.” I don’t remember the exact words she used, but the simplicity of that phrase hit me hard: Do something. It felt like a call to action that echoed a personal motto I use in the SCA: Gloria in Facto, which translates to “There is glory in the doing.”

Crazy, but they are doing something.

Years ago, when I was searching for a motto that would inspire me in my medieval pursuits, I wanted something like the modern Nike slogan “Just Do It.” But of course, I needed a medieval spin! So, I turned to my friend, Master Drx, and asked him to translate that idea into Latin for me. What he came up with was Gloria in Facto, which feels even more powerful and appropriate. Plus, it steers me clear of any pesky copyright infringement, right?

But honestly, that phrase has become more than just a cool medieval motto for me. It’s a reminder that there’s justice and glory in simply taking action. Whether it’s trying something new in the arts, contributing to the SCA community, or even tackling challenges in everyday life, the key is to do something. You don’t have to wait for everything to be perfect or for the stars to align. The act of doing itself brings meaning and, sometimes, unexpected rewards.

What about you? Do you have a personal motto or phrase that gets you motivated?
