Fashion Highlights from Calontir’s Summer Coronation 2024
Greetings, fellow SCAdians and other time travelers!
I had the pleasure of capturing some fascinating fashion photos at the Summer 2024 Kingdom of Calontir’s coronation of Their Majesties Robert and Magge Magnus. It was an amazing day, and I found unexpected delight in chatting with folks about their garb. Most people were thrilled that I noticed them and were perfectly fine with having their photos posted. A few preferred not to be on the internet, which I respected. And of course, I never post pictures of children, even though four well-behaved little ones were practically at my feet.
One interesting thing I observed, which may not have been a first occurrence, was how the fancy part of people’s attire tended to disappear after morning court. Many folks went outside to watch or participate in fighting, some attended meetings or classes, and others simply put away their elaborate outfits because it was too hot or tiring to wear them for long. The fancy garb didn’t make a comeback for the evening court either.
Nonetheless, I managed to talk with three wonderful people about their awesome garb and got their permission to share their photos.

First up, I spotted Charles von Bayrreuth before I even walked in the door. He was sporting a fancy, showy German Landsknecht outfit. Landsknechte were well-armed and experienced warriors, recruitable in large numbers throughout Germany and Austria by the Holy Roman Emperor. Lord Charles was more than happy to share how he made his clothing and the techniques he used. We had a delightful conversation all centered on his garb.

Later, I had a great chat with Baron Hayashi Norikata from Caer Galen in the Kingdom of the Outlands. He traveled to our event to honor Their Royal Majesties Robert and Magge, whom he knew from when they lived in the Outlands. I first saw him without his coronet, and his appearance was just too perfect. His shaved head added so much to his 15th-century Japanese persona. While his look seemed authentic to me, he confessed he wasn’t wearing the full seven layers expected because of the extreme heat. He only wore three.

Lastly, I finally got to talk with Lord Mkty Nakhthor, who portrays a 14th-century New Kingdom Egyptian. I’ve wanted to chat with him ever since I first saw him two years ago, around the time he decided his persona would be Egyptian. His garb may be simple, but it’s striking. His head covering and kohl-ringed eyes make him stand out to us SCAdians. Anyone not in the SCA might wonder why he was wearing a dress.
The Barony of Mag Mor put on a fantastic event. Between the two courts, there were arts and sciences competitions and classes. The scribes even had a table where they could paint and chat. Despite the extreme heat, many fighters tested their strength in it, and the food at the Inn was scrumptious as always.

I thoroughly enjoyed talking with people about their garb, something I did often when I was new to the SCA. This Coronation was a special treat. Along with reconnecting with long-time friends, I met three people I’d never talked with before and gained insight into their views of the SCA and history. Awesome!
