The Scribal Toolkit: A Complete Guide to Your Kit Essentials

Greetings, creative companions and fellow SCA scribes!

I’m excited to share a little behind-the-scenes info from our June Calontir Scribes’ Guild meeting. The baronies were encouraged to assemble a scribal supply kit. These kits are destined to be the heart of scribal creativity at our kingdom’s upcoming events, especially for those eager to help or dabble in painting preprint awards.

I happily stepped forward to select items for Lonely Tower’s scribal kit. Lucky for me (and us!), I already had a trove of them already tucked away. Things I gathered over time, either from experimenting with tools for beginner scribes or from the various classes I had the joy of teaching. This meant I only needed to add a few more items to complete our kit.

Are you curious about what tools and trinkets I’ve included in Lonely Tower’s Scribal Kit? Stay tuned, as I give you the details I believe bring our preprint charters to life!

The bare necessities.

  • Student water-based gouache paint sets in a variety of colors. I have included Daler-Rowney and Reeves because I already had them.
  • Multiple sizes of small, moderately priced watercolor brushes
  • Rinse water containers about the size of individual Jello cups
  • Paint pallets from the dollar store
  • Paper towels, the cheaper the better
  • An artist toolbox or tote to carry it all in

Optional items

  • 12″ rulers
  • HB Pencils
  • Black micron pens in sizes 005 and 01
  • White vinyl erasers
  • Plastic table cloth
  • Cartridge calligraphy pens and ink refills

And there you have it. That’s the full reveal of our Lonely Tower Scribal Kit with items pieced together for our community’s creatives. From the essential tools to the optional extras, these items keep in mind the needs of both our seasoned artists and those just beginning to dip a brush into the world of scribal arts.

My scribal kit needs reorganizing, but it’s all there.

This kit isn’t just a collection of items; it’s a gateway to imagination. A means to keep our rich Calontir traditions alive, and a way to connect with each other through shared artistry. Whether at events or in the quiet of your own creative space, I hope this kit inspires you to explore, create, and perhaps even teach others the enchanting art of medieval manuscript illumination.

  1. I think a ruler is not optional. A protractor, a circle template and/or compass are not required but super duper close, as are printouts of line drawings of awards. Good erasers, I prefer the white rubber ones, along with the old style typewriter sand erasers for ink, are indispensable. I could go on with my go-to stuff, but the above things are what I’m trying to add as we build our Baronial Scribe box. ~ Aidan, Barony of Forgotten Sea

    1. Great suggestions. I have rulers and award images in the kit but didn’t list them in my post. The vinyl eraser is a terrific add. Thanks for the comment.
