Exploring Lilies War XXXV: Snapshots from the Barony of the Lonely Tower
Hey all! Let me tell you about the amazing time I had this year at Lilies War 35. It was an eight-day extravaganza filled with sensational sights, engrossing experiences, and informative classes. Of course, there were a few meetings thrown into the mix to add variety. In fact, there were so many activities and picture-perfect moments I couldn’t do them all justice. I missed out on some incredible opportunities, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
The weather, believe it or not, actually cooperated for most of the event. We had six out of the eight days with comfortable conditions, which made everything even more enjoyable. I can’t complain at all because I truly had the time of my life.
Now, in past Lilies (30, 31, 33) I attempted to take photos of every single thing I did. Let me tell you, it was an impossible task! This time around, I’ve decided to focus on capturing a few specific activities that caught my attention. So, in this post, you’ll find my favorite pictures from the Barony of the Lonely Tower‘s court and their investiture ceremony.
Oh, and if you’re new to the SCA (or maybe you stumbled upon my post by chance), let me fill you in on a little background. To us, a “war” is a gathering with martial arts as the main activity for hundreds of participants. War events can also include other activities like classes, courts, dancing, performances, and shopping. A Barony is a type of local chapter within the SCA, with ceremonial leaders known as “Baron” and “Baroness.”
Alright, without further ado, let me share my photographs with you, along with comments about what’s happening in them. Get ready to be immersed in some Lilies War allure!
After everyone settled in, Their Majesties of Calontir Agamemnon and Marie le Favre with the Baron and Baroness of Lonely Tower Augustine and Aleit took their seats. The excitement in the air was palpable. First, Their Majesties offered the court to Their Excellencies. They kicked off proceedings with special recognition for the Defenders of the Gate (DoG). All the DoG members were called forward. And to everyone’s delight, Their Excellencies had a delightful twist in store. They wanted to add another deserving member to its ranks.

Lord Miklos Farma, the Anser Pursuivant herald, called forward Lord Giovanni di Angelo Marchisetti, a young and incredibly talented individual, who had been making waves with his dedication and skill in Cut and Thrust combat. With a beaming smile, Giovanni was invited up to the front, his heart probably pounding with anticipation.
In a proud moment he will forever cherish, Lord Giovanni was presented with the Lonely Tower’s prestigious Defender of the Gate (DoG) award.
This milestone is highly prized among our Baronial fighters and archers. It symbolizes their commitment, prowess, and unwavering dedication to their craft. It was a truly special moment for Giovanni. His befitting recognition caused rousing cheers and applause from the populace.

After Lord Giovanni expressed his gratitude to Their Excellencies for the honor of becoming a DoG, something joyous manifested. As he prepared to make his way back to his seat a wave of excitement swept through his fellow order members. You see, there’s a special tradition among the Defenders of the Gate known as the “DoG-pile.” In an outpouring of camaraderie and tradition, the other order members playfully piled on Lord Giovanni! It was a whirlwind of laughter and friendly chaos as they celebrated his achievement in a most heartening and boisterous way.
The sheer happiness on their faces and the genuine bonds of friendship shared were priceless. It was a testament to the strong sense of community and support that thrives within the Barony of the Lonely Tower fighters. “Cave Canes” (Beware of the DoGs)
Witnessing that scene unfold was an absolute delight, and I couldn’t help but smile. Moments like these remind us of the deep connections we forge within the SCA and the incredible friendships that form along the way.
Next, the Honorable Lady Anne von Weingarten was inducted into the Order of the Rose Window. Unfortunately, I didn’t capture any pictures of her. But let me tell you about her remarkable contributions to the Barony. Honorable Lady Anne has been an invaluable asset to the Barony, serving as Seneschal and Chronicler for extensive terms and stewarding numerous successful events. Her dedication and hard work have left a lasting impact on our residents.
Not only has she served the Barony, but she has also made significant contributions throughout the Kingdom of Calontir by teaching the art of silk banner painting. She teaches and creates beautiful banners that enhance the ambiance of our encampments and events. In recognition of her exceptional artistry and contributions, The Honorable Lady Anne was welcomed into the venerable Order of the Rose Window. It is well-deserved recognition that celebrates her talent, creativity, and the beauty she brings to the Barony and Calontir.
In that remarkable court, I saw something unique. The Baron and Baroness of the Lonely Tower felt an overwhelming need to express their deep appreciation for the outstanding individuals who had reached the pinnacle of recognition within the Barony. Driven by their tireless efforts and unwavering dedication, these remarkable individuals had made an incredible impact on the Barony. To honor their lifelong selfless service, Their Excellencies Augustine and Aleit created a new prestigious honor called the Order of the Belfyre. This order is to symbolize the perpetually unwavering commitment, passion, and support extraordinary members provide. The Order’s recipients have a never-ending light that shines brightly, illuminating the path for all who call the Lonely Tower their home.
During their final court, Their Excellencies proudly inducted the first three members into this new esteemed Order. It was a heartfelt moment, filled with gratitude and admiration for these exceptional individuals.

The first inductee into the new Order of the Belfyre was Sir Aleksandr Yaroslavovich Vyetcikov. Sir Aleksandr has held an impressive list of titles and positions within the Barony. As a former Baron, Marshal, Champion, and Officer, he has shown unparalleled dedication to the local fighting community. Not only has he displayed remarkable skill on the battlefield, but he has also taken on the role of training new participants with his direct and thoughtful advice.
Sir Aleksandr graciously accepted the role of seneschal when the Baron and Baroness personally invited him during a Lonely Tower business meeting. Little did we know at the time that a devastating plague would soon strike, and the responsibilities of the position would become even more significant. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, Sir Aleksandr persevered and remained in office, providing us sound-guidance and unwavering support.

The remarkable and beloved Honorable Lady Kezia von Holzenhaus was the second inductee into the Order of the Belfyre. Baroness Kezia has played a pivotal role in the Barony’s archery community, managing shoots, submitting scores, and wrangling participants for the King’s Company of Archers. She also completed her Martial training, showing her sincere dedication to the sport. Countless times, she’s provided expertise and leadership.
As longstanding guardian of the Order of Precedence, Baroness Kezia meticulously records the members’ awards and preserves the Barony’s history. Her extensive wisdom stems from her experiences as Baroness and Vicaress.
Her dedication and nurturing spirit have left a profound impact. She is a true pillar of strength and a beacon of wisdom. Baroness Kezia’s induction into the Order of the Belfyre is well-deserved. And the Barony’s light shines brighter too because of the stories she shares.

I’ve known Master Rolf Hobart for three Baronial Championships, and he’s always impressed in Archery, Arts and Sciences, and Cut and Thrust combat. He’s an amazing person, blending patience, kindness, humor, and authenticity.
But that’s not all! Master Rolf is a talented artisan, excelling in various endeavors. For five years, he served as Their Excellencies’ scribe, crafting numerous exquisite scrolls. He also illuminated scrolls for previous Excellencies.
In recognition of his achievements and impact on the residents, Master Rolf was the third person recognized for the honor of the Order of the Belfyre. He rightly deserves this honor!

After Lord Miklos concluded the final court of Their Excellencies, Their Majesties, recognizing the exceptional service and dedication of Augustine and Aleit, requested their presence in front of their thrones. It was an arresting moment as they stepped forward.
In a regal gesture, each of them was presented with a Court Barony award. Can you imagine the emotions that rippled through the populace as they were adorned with coronets and presented their scrolls? It was a testament to the incredible impact they made during their time as Lonely Tower’s Baron and Baroness.
This recognition was a tribute to their abiding commitment and the unforgettable impression they left on us all. Their service, dedication, and leadership were exemplary.
As I look at this photo, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and admiration for Their Excellencies Augustine and Aleit. They have left Lonely Tower an enduring legacy.

Check out this photo I managed to capture! It proclaims the significant point Lord Charles von Strausberg and Lady Kathleen of Stonehaven took their place upon the empty Lonely Tower thrones after taking their oaths to the Crown. Their Majesties, in turn, reciprocated with their own oath of support in their new roles. It was an exchange signifying the unity of the Crown and the Barony. With utmost reverence, Their Excellencies received the Lonely Tower coronets, signifying their new roles as leaders of the Barony.
I caught this photo capturing Their Excellencies’ facial expressions reflecting a mix of anticipation, honor, and the weight of responsibility that comes with their new positions.
As the shutter closed on that notable photo, the story of the Barony of the Lonely Tower continues to unfold with Lord Charles and Lady Kathleen at the helm. Their journey as Baron and Baroness is just beginning, and the possibilities are endless. They carry with them the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of all of us who call the Lonely Tower home.
