Finding Purpose and Joy in SCA Awards: How They Strengthen Our Community

Hey there, fellow SCA enthusiasts and all things creative.

Let’s consider for a moment the world of award creation and giving. A place where hours of dedication and hundreds of bursts of creativity by fellow scribes and wordsmiths converge to create something extraordinary.

You know, whether you’re newer in the SCA or a seasoned veteran, the purpose behind these awards is crystal clear – they’re all about recognizing and celebrating the remarkable efforts of the recipients.

It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting out or if you’ve climbed to the highest echelons of the Society; when those beautiful accolades are handed out, we’re all in it together, rejoicing and marking these exclusive occasions with heartfelt appreciation.

I’ve received my fair share of recognition in various settings, like work and other clubs, but nothing holds a candle to the SCA honors. Sure, a piece of paper and a handshake are nice, but the SCA goes above and beyond with its recognition process. They infuse the awards with art, genuine creativity, and intricate details, making them truly memorable and entertaining.

In the Kingdom of Calontir, receiving an award means more than just an individual acknowledgment. It’s like becoming part of a esteemed group, where you’re warmly welcomed as the newest member of a wonderful family.

Let me share a personal anecdote with you. When I received my first award for illumination, it felt like a dream come true. I was just having a blast painting pictures inspired by the Codex Manesse, giving each one my unique twist and connecting them to people in the SCA. It was a delightful surprise to be honored for something that brought me so much joy and fulfillment.

But even more amazing, these awards are not fleeting moments; they last a lifetime. I still have mine framed and displayed in my home, constantly reminding me of the happiness and meaning it brought to my life.

Awards in the SCA are like expressions of our dreams coming to life. Take my Laurel scroll, for example – it’s not just a piece of parchment, it physically embodies a long-cherished dream realized, and it represents a new beginning in my SCA journey.

And let’s not forget that award creation itself is a profound purpose for many of us. Whether we’re composing texts, creating intricate lettering, or painting elaborate scrolls, it’s the reason we keep learning and exploring new skills and manuscript history. Teaching ongoing classes takes it to a whole new level, even if it’s a little scary sometimes.

You know what’s fascinating? When I’m engrossed in scroll painting, I lose track of time entirely. It becomes a form of meditation, where the world fades away, and it’s just me and my creativity in harmony. There’s something therapeutic about it.

Beyond their obvious intent, these award scrolls serve a myriad of purposes. They become vessels of knowledge and tradition, as we teach and learn from one another. They add beauty to our lives and the spaces we inhabit. But most importantly, they give us a profound sense of purpose, that fills our hearts with joy and fulfillment.

So, whether you’re the creator or the recipient, embrace the magic of these awards, for they are more than just physical tokens of appreciation – they are threads that weave the fabric of our SCA journey. They unite us in a shared passion for creativity, friendship, and meaningful connections.
