Moments Caught on Camera: Photos of SCA Mag Mor’s Cattle Raids

Hey there all, guess what? I finally got to go back to a Cattle Raids event. It’s a big camping bash hosted by the Barony of Mag Mor every year. If you’ve never been, you’re missing out—big time! This year the event was held at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Nebraska, which is as close to my stomping ground as it is to Mag Mor’s. Kinda feels like they’re throwing a party in my backyard!

Last year, I had to skip it because of some family stuff (you know how it is), so you can imagine how pumped I was to dive back into the action this time around. Trust me, it was everything I hoped for and more!

The event’s activities were spread over many buildings and camping areas, so my pictures don’t portray the huge number of people who attended. Of course, there were SCA fighting activities, but also four arts and sciences competitions. Equestrian activities were also offered, but the usual riders didn’t bring their horses. (I’m a house pet person, so I have no idea why that happened.)

So, without further ado, I have for you my best photos from this year’s Mag Mor Cattle Raids event.

Part of the common area for chatting up friends.
The multiple entries for the four Arts and Sciences competitions
Food preparation for the evening’s feast.
More friends chatting. A lot of that going on.
I have an abundance of fighting photos. This time I’m only showing one.

What do equestrians do without their horses? They create adult fun games based on horse-themed activities. I spent an hour watching adults “ride” stick horses and go through down-sized competitions they usually do with horses.

Basket of handmade items to be presented in court as largess.

For me, the highlight of most events is Court. A time for our Monarchs to make announcements and welcome people to various SCA orders for their accomplishments. This site sadly doesn’t have the attractive covered stage like Cass Couty Fair offered. But it isn’t as pricey either. (Sites keep raising fees, while our attendance shrinks. Who can afford that!)
