Navigating Life’s Chaos While Preparing for Lilies War
Getting ready for Lilies War has suddenly turned into a full-time job.
I knew teaching three classes would take preparation. There are handouts to finish, supplies to gather, and another blog post still waiting to be written. On paper, none of that sounds overwhelming. But life has a way of adding “just one more thing” at exactly the wrong time.
First came my grandson’s high school graduation, which of course was important and wonderful. Then my daughter’s new husband organized a surprise birthday party for her. Again, a happy event I wouldn’t want to miss. But between family gatherings, driving around town, and all the little details that go along with celebrations, my carefully planned “Lilies prep time” quietly disappeared.
To add to the adventure, I now have to do laundry at a laundromat while my remodeling work continues at home. That turns an ordinary household chore into an expedition requiring planning, hauling bags, and waiting for machines. It eats up far more time than I realized.
Somewhere in the middle of all this are Qigong class notes, handouts for Eight Pieces of Brocade and Five Animal Frolics, clothing to pack, and the usual “Where did I put that?” moments that happen before every major SCA event.
Still, this is the kind of busy that comes from a full life. Family celebrations, teaching opportunities, creative projects, and preparations for time with friends at Lilies War are all good things. I just wish they would stop arriving all at once!

And then there’s the packing.
