Celebrating HL Astrid: A Creative Force in Calontir

I’ll be taking a second apprentice soon, at Mag Mor‘s Cattle Raids event. So, I want to be sure you’ve met HL Astrid Esbjornsdottir, my first apprentice. Astrid truly shines as one of Calontir’s most creative scribes.

If you’ve ever admired a beautifully illuminated scroll, chances are Astrid had a hand in it. If you’ve been lucky enough to learn scroll-making from someone who makes it feel like magic, Astrid was likely involved.

Here are just a few of Astrid’s many honors:
  • Award of ArmsVert, three annulets in bend, Or — was given to her by Their Majesties Erzebet and Shadan in 1985.
  • Swan — was given by Their Majesties Edward and Elisabeth in 1986, recognizing her early grace and artistic promise.
  • Lily — Their Majesties Hroerekr and Morgana gave this in 1992. It was in recognition of her beautiful calligraphy. Her contributions to Calontir’s aesthetic soul were also acknowledged.

Astrid is a true educator and mentor in the SCA. She’s guided more scribes than I can count—some say “hundreds”—with her gentle instruction and unwavering support. She has written the words of Calontir’s rulers for years, preserving their edicts and honors in fine calligraphy.

But Astrid’s work isn’t just beautiful—it’s foundational. She has been part of the visual voice of Calontir for more than forty years. She has brought poetry to parchment and inspired countless others to do the same.

Astrid’s SCA journey has been a tapestry of art, service, and mentorship, woven over decades. Her dedication to the arts and sciences is unmistakable. And her ability to lift others along the way is just as extraordinary.

Astrid’s warmth, wisdom, and wry sense of humor have left a lasting mark on the Kingdom. She has influenced everyone lucky enough to work beside her. And I am proud to call her my apprentice and long time friend.
