Hey everyone! Today, for Women’s History Month, I’m excited to share the story of Li Qingzhao (1084-c.1155), one of China’s most celebrated poets from the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Not only was she an amazing poet, but she was also skilled in calligraphy and painting, all while coming from a highly educated family. Li’s talent shone early on, and she made a name for herself in her teens.

In 1101, she married Zhao Mingcheng, a man who shared her intellectual and spiritual interests. They had a strong, happy marriage until his untimely death in 1129. This, along with the turmoil following the fall of the Northern Song dynasty, deeply impacted Li. Her earlier poetry is known for its lively, vibrant tone, while her later works reflect the sorrow of losing both her husband and her home. One of her famous lines is: “I drink alone under the moon, and the sadness is as deep as the sea.”

Li Qingzhao was incredibly prolific, writing seven volumes of essays and six volumes of poetry—though unfortunately, much of her work hasn’t survived. Despite this, her poetry has left a lasting cultural impact. She thrived in a time when women were often silenced, making her achievements even more remarkable.Gisling,

Li’s legacy goes beyond her words—she stands as an inspiration for women throughout history, showing what’s possible even when society tries to hold you back. If I could choose, she’d absolutely be a top pick for Women’s History Month!

What part of Li Qingzhao’s story resonates with you the most—her literary talent, her resilience in the face of loss, or her ability to rise above societal expectations? Let me know in the comments!
