Kris Kinder: Experience the Magic of Christmas Markets

In another month, the Barony of Forgotten Sea’s Kris Kinder event will occur. This event is a delightful nod to the old-world charm of Germany’s “Christkindlmarkt.” They are magical Christmas markets found across Europe during the Advent season. If you’re wondering, “Christkindlmarkt” translates to “Christ Child Market”—which sounds fancy, doesn’t it? These markets have been around since the late Middle Ages. Their origins date back to somewhere between the 14th and 16th centuries. They were particularly popular in German-speaking regions.

Picture this: a festive market. It’s bustling with handmade goods and holiday treats. There is even a special “Christkind,” usually a young girl. She dresses in in angelic garb and opens the market with a ceremonial speech. Talk about festive flair!

The original German Christkindmarkt kicked off in the 14th century, and quickly became a holiday tradition. It wasn’t just a place to buy things; it was an experience! Local artisans, bakers, and craftsmen would fill the outdoor stalls. They offered goodies like carved wooden toys, handcrafted ornaments, and gingerbread. There was also mulled wine—to warm you up! Soaking up the festive atmosphere was as important as shopping. There was music, delicious food, and all-around holiday cheer in the air.

Now, while the Forgotten Sea’s Kris Kinder captures that same festive spirit, they’ve put their own twist on it. Since the SCA isn’t a religious organization, there’s no young Christkind to open the market. Instead, Their Majesties hold court, bringing a medieval touch to the holiday magic. So, don’t expect any ceremonial angel speeches—unless you count a booming proclamation from the royal court as a modern-day equivalent!

This year, the event will be extra special for me. Two friends from the Barony of the Lonely Tower will be receiving well-deserved recognition. HL Xorazne is set to join the Order of the Pelican for her amazing service to Calontir. HL Kjarr will become a Laurel for his arts and crafts wizardry. I’m already planning to cheer as loudly as possible—you’ve been warned!

Are you in the mood for some old-fashioned holiday (shopping) fun with a medieval twist? Kris Kinder is the perfect place to get into the spirit. Grab a warm drink. Browse the market stalls. Soak in the festive cheer. Who said you need snow and reindeer for good winter fun?
