Creating Your Legacy: Processes for Aspiring SCA Laurels

Becoming a Laurel in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is a rewarding journey filled with creativity, dedication, and community spirit. I was honored to be welcomed into that illustrious order in the Kingdom of Calontir in 2010. Since then, I’ve been asked so many questions about the process of becoming a Laurel that I decided to do a series of blog posts about it.

The journey to a Laurel isn’t just about mastering a craft. It’s about contributing to a vibrant, supportive community and sharing your passion with others. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Excellence in Your Art: First and foremost, you need to excel in your chosen art or science. This means not only creating high-quality work but also continuously learning and improving your skills.

Teaching and Sharing: A huge part of being a Laurel is sharing your knowledge with others. This can be through formal classes, informal mentoring, or even writing articles and blog posts.

Service to the Community: Being active in your kingdom, local SCA group and contributing to the community is crucial. This can involve organizing events, helping with projects, or simply being a supportive and engaged member.

Peer Recognition: Laurels are chosen by their peers, which means you’ll need to earn the respect and recognition of existing Laurels. This often comes from consistent, high-quality contributions to the community over time.
