From Creative Block to Basket Bliss: My Reed Weaving Journey
Hey there, fellow SCAdians and basket enthusiasts! Let me tell you about my journey overcoming a pesky creative block that had me hesitating to dive into the world of reed weaving. Spoiler alert: I conquered it, and I’m here to share the adventure with you!
So, picture this: me, staring at a bundle of reed, feeling a mix of excitement and uncertainty. From the get-go, I encountered some quirks. Like, can anyone actually distinguish the smooth side from the rough when the reed is wet? ‘Cause I sure couldn’t! Even bending it into a “U” shape didn’t work. Talk about frustrating!

Then came the weaving part. I laid out those wider reeds, grabbed my fake “string,” and started weaving away. Easy peasy, right? Wrong. When it came time to incorporate the narrower reeds, they just refused to make a flat circle. I tried everything, even using clothespins to hold them in place to saying a prayer, but they kept flipping on their sides.

But hey, a good night’s sleep can do wonders for the soul (and for problem-solving). So, with a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of determination, I tackled my basket project once again by moving on to weaving the sides. And you know what? Things started to click. I soaked those reeds, inserted the handle, and wove everything together like a pro. Well, maybe not a pro, but definitely with a newfound sense of confidence.

Fast forward to the last day of my basket-making adventure. I was feeling pretty proud of myself as I carefully placed the final rim reeds and secured everything in place with some narrow cane. Sure, I broke a piece along the way (oops!), but every mishap was just another lesson learned. But you know, there’s something genuinely satisfying about problem-solving in the midst of a creative project.

Every little deviation from the kit’s instructions used to bug me until my basketry coach, HL Nest (how cool is that name?), told me that there’s no such thing as a perfect basket. And you know what? I now embrace the imperfections as part of the process and learning. And so, my friends, I present to you my very first reed basket, flaws and all.

Am I thrilled with how it turned out? Absolutely. Am I already itching to start my next basket kit project? You betcha. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the end result – it’s about discovery, growth, and creativity. And I’m just getting started.
Sounds like fun!!!
It is, but there’s so much more to learn than I realized. That’s what I love about it!
