Scribal Project Information I’ve looked at many lovely scrolls and scribal works on the Internet. Many Kingdoms, Scribal Guilds, and Bloggers display multiple, well-crafted scrolls. I enjoy reading about the techniques and materials scribes use to create their art. I sometimes wonder about information that wasn’t included with the image. Often it’s about the inspiring text source. But not always. Since […]
I’ve been posting information relating to the making of a scroll I can now show. How to Google For Illuminated Manuscript Inspirations, My Battle With Calligraphy, and 5 Tips To Train Your Artist Eye all sprang from my efforts to create this scroll. The scroll is an Iren-Hirth for the Duke Sir Anton Rhaghelan. That alone is special because the […]
In 2000 I entered Calontir‘s Arts and Sciences Championship Competiton with the three items in this photo. (Yes, they were all mine. Back then I was known in the SCA as “Siobhan le Blake”.) The easiest single entry to see is the colorful six item comparative illuminated manuscript styles’ study. Lower in the photo, in the center, is an oversized diamond-point […]

For a few years, about 2008 and 2009, I enjoyed decorating glassware. The glassworkers in Calontir were making baskets-full of beads at that time. I wanted to decorate glassware. Making glass, like Calontir’s Glassworkers Guild now do, is a true labor of love. It takes skill, heat, and unique materials. I researched engraved and painted […]
I love the Manesse Codex illuminations! The heraldry and style are so inspiring. I wanted to have these painted so much, they are the reason I learned illumination in the first place. This “Throwback Thursday” I’m sharing my scroll illumination inspired by it. (See the original page by clicking here.) My Illumination From Mathieu Chartrain’s 2004 Capstone The Complete Scroll
Here’s a picture from 2008 for Throwback Thursday. It’s an award I did with calligraphy and illlumination for an SCA friend, Luciana. (You know, that’s the Society for Creative Anachronism). Luci received a Laurel for all the amazing Renaissance and medieval clothing she researched and made. The whole story is…Luciana received the actual award many years earlier, but not the […]
